The Bust Magazine 25th Birthday at House of Yes
It was incredible to go to the Bust Magazine party celebrating their 25th Birthday. I love seeing how the House of Yes space changes from event to event depending on the attendees, entertainment, and hosts. It was so cool to see Jenny Slate host, with off-the-cuff humor about hot dentist fantasies and bagels. The surprise hit for me was seeing Miss Eaves perform. You’ll be sure to see her at an upcoming Math Magazine event. Guaranteed. It was refreshing to see sex positivity running throughout the night, and the majority of the guests were women. Masturbation, pubic hair, and more were all celebrated!
Bust Magazine is a major inspiration to us at Math Magazine and independent feminist publishers everywhere. From photocopying and stapling the first issue of Bust to hosting parties with Erykah Badu, Phoebe Robinson, and The Resistance Revival Chorus. It’s an impressive trajectory that gives editors like me hope.
The founders, Debbie Stoller and Laurie Henzel, spoke about a time not too long ago when just the word feminist was not so widely accepted. While we still have a long way to go, it’s the work of publications like Bust that help make Math Magazine and the sex-positive movement possible.
